This may not directly answer your question but it is kinda similar. I was trying to redeem the ticket to Hawaii... I requested UA but sadly enough I was only offered the cheapest flight available at that time (same as what it is shown in Expedia.com). So I decide to pay for the tix myself and keep the points for later.
My guess is that they will only book you the cheapest available. Other flight options did not even show up in their system.

i.e. if I want a weekend trip, the 6am flights will be FAR less than the 6pm flights I want (on both days). Will TY say I have to take the 6am flights because the system has them as the lowest cost flights?
