Even if you were to not cancel your original return plans and book another flight to another destination (even to a co-terminal), I do not believe that anything would happen to you.

Actually, I am doing the same thing tomorrow (returning to BUR instead of LAX) and the thought of something odd happening didn't cross my mind. In fact, I wouldn't even cancel the return flight.
