There is a word too much in the last sentence. Why only perhaps?

My session yesterday involved my bag being checked against the template where it fitted, but only just. I was initially told that because I'd had to push it in I needed to check it, and when I politely told the numpties to go forth, they reluctantly allowed my to take it, but sternly told me that I should pack more carefully and use a smaller bag in the future. I just about managed to refrain from physical violence.
