The elite agent is wrong. Just ask to standby on your desired #2 SYR-DTW flight. Unless the gate agent is really keen, they'll only put you on standby for that flight. What happens once you get to DTW is up to you.

And yes, it means a 4+ hour layover, but that doesn't matter once you get on the first flight.
