Current best bet for tourists is generally believed to be The Imperial, where we stayed last November. It is an astoundingly good restoration of an old colonial property. Pool (outdoors) is a bit rubbish, however, and has not been restored like the rest of the property. They have some fantastic suites, and the level of finish in all rooms (we stayed in 3, 2 rooms and 1 signature suite, over 4 days - a long story!) is exceptional. You will not believe that you could build this well in New Delhi.

The Oberoi is also very well regarded, and we had a meal there, but its an ugly 1970's building devoid of any charm. Pool seemed a lot better, though!

Once you get past these two you drop down a tier in the opinion of most people (the current Travel+Leisure World Top 500 only lists these two, if I remember rightly) although there may be something with a great pool somewhere!
