I thought I read somewhere that GYE suffers from severe fog this time of year...or was that UIO? That shouldn't have anything to do with fuel stops...but I thought I remembered hearing that one of those flights diverts regularly (on the way into Ecuador) during our winter.
That might have something to do with it. EWR-GYE is scheduled to get in at 6:25AM. If GYE and/or the closest alternate (UIO) are usually fogged in in the morning, they might need to take on more fuel just in case of a diversion.
Would you rather divert to take on fuel in Bogota, Medellin or Panama City at 5AM or Miami or Orlando at 2:30AM?
