You may want to consider the Tube in that case. It runs every few minutes, so there's no risk of a half-hour wait, and will probably take the same total journey time to anywhere interesting (there's not much around Paddington). If you get a one-day travelcard (cheaper after 9.30), it's not a bad deal.
