I'm not sure why HP-operated flights would not be eligible for award travel, as all were given US flight numbers some months ago. There is no such thing as an HP flight number anymore.

You may want to wait until March 3rd when HP and US are on the same reservation system. At that point there would be no distinction at all between booking an HP or US flight
