I've inquired a half dozen times or so at various hotels when they were offering gift certificates for sale along with some other promo. Each time the hotels told me that no points or stay credit would be given so I've never purchased any. However, I don't see why you couldn't get points for incidentals and thus stay credit as well. When I'm on a free stay of any kind I always make a point to charge something to my room. Be it internet access, a phone call, a meal, etc; it doesn't matter. Worst case scenario you will get credit for the incidentals which is fine with me most of the time!
