Exactly, that's one of the reasons. Planes don't make money sitting on the apron all day. Besides that, it is also to add feed to the Mexican flights as well. It might appear ridiculous, but if it serves the purpose, why not try it?
Besides, in case some forgot, DL is trying to rebuild LAX into a full fledged hub again, and for that they have to start out small capacity. As DL slowly adds more destinations, chances are CRJ flights will be upgraded, even if only to CRJ-700s, or CRJ-900, the latter which would also offer an F cabin.
