All these LAX RJs are simply for feed; otherwise they would be in for a big war up and down the west coast and no airline is interested in that...
I'm also sure they are testing many of these markets for now to see which work out better. LAX-LAS is already being 'upgraded' (in terms of capacity) to a CRJ700. Frontier, which started once a day A319 service between SFO and LAX is having a tough and slow time with it - if DL had started these feeder flights with mainline equipment, they would be having a real tough time as well, not to mention the fact that they don't have the right-size mainline equipment for now (the 738 or MD88 is simply too much capacity at this point for most of these...)
I believe that DL has lots of medallions in the LA area (judging by the impossibility of upgrades between LAX-ATL) who would fly DL mainline between west coast cities if it was offered. I will certainly not fly on the RJs when another airline has mainline service.
I think there is room for competition. Currently AFAIK, AS and UA are the only airines affering non-stop service between LAX and SEA.
