If it was me, i'd rather spend the money on the card renewal and know that i'm not risking any possible problems with my booking, as I think the T&Cs are such that you need to still have your BA Amex account active during your travel. However, you could also let the card renew and then cancel it when you come back, and ask AMEX for a refund or the annual fee as you only had it an extra month. Might work?
