This is true. However, when I was in the same situation at JFK the agent said, "Technically, we cannot allow you access, but no problem this time". She then also re-arranged our seat assignments so that we can each have our own row on a 747 (not a full flight).
This was also the 11:30 PM flight to AMS from JFK and the lounge was 75% empty.
