The ARNK goes in between sectors where you have a surface segment such as DFW-MCO//ARNK//TPA-DFW or even DFW-JFK//ARNK//EWR-DFW.

In times of disruption, you just need to ask for the space on your inbound flights to be protected. Agents will not have a clue what you're on about if you start talking about ARNK's.
