I flew FRA-FCO on Friday evening. First safety announcements in German and English by the purser with the safety demonstrations by the FAs as usual. Then the tape while taxiing to the runway. And to my surprise the announcement was not in Italian but in Chinese! There were a lot of Chinese-looking people on the flight, so it may actually not have been a bad idea, but I was nevertheless surprised. I fully expected the next announcement to be Finnish, as there were also a lot of Finnish people on the flight, but it didn't come. Neither was there an announcement in Italian.

I thought the policy was: Live announcements in German and English, and taped announcement(s) in the language(s) of the country flying to/from. Sometimes a French-speaking purser would do the French announcement himself, but before Friday's flight I never heard the announcement in a language other than German, English or the language of the origin and destination.
