So, I stay at the GH in HK a dozen times a year, or therebouts. Most times, I am taken up to my room by someone at the desk. They walk me to the elevator, join me in it, then open the door for me and show me my room.
I am, of course, already very familiar with the rooms.
Then they politely stand until they are dismissed. What irks me is that I'm not sure whether they're expecting a tip. I know that, generally, I never tip in HK, except by sometimes rounding up my cab fares. However, it's rather unclear at the hotel, at that moment, whether I should be giving them HK$20 or simply saying "Thanks, good night!" and turning to my overstuffed suitcase.
Am I crazy? Anyone care to share their view on this? For the record, it *only* happens to me at the GH in HK -- no other hotels in HK or other countries where I regularly travel.
