That is true, the EU has more stringent noise regulation. I know that a number of eastern European companies had to trade/write-off their DC-9 and B727 fleets because of this.

Whereas in the US NWA, for example, flies the DC9, and Fedex among others fly the B722.

Perhaps some technical experts can shed a light on this.
