I think these would qualify as red-eyes, that is, east-bound flights that take advantage of time zone changes. That isn't really what I'm going for here. A red-eye that departs at 12:15 a.m. isn't substantially different than one that departs at 11:45 p.m.

Even though the LAS-HNL flight is west-bound, I would still count it as a red-eye. It's basically a "sleeping" flight. Travel to/from Alaska and Hawaii is abnormal and has more in common with int'l long hauls than domestic hub/spoke flights. I'm more interested in those 1-hour flights that head into hub cities, that are mainly designed for connecting traffic. The kind of flights you have to roll out of bed really, really early for. I doubt many people on the 2:45 a.m. out of Vegas have just gotten out of bed.
