Terrain Terrain Pull Up! Pull Up!

Last tuesday, on an AE/NW codeshare into MRY from LAX, early evening, my wife and I were having a pleasant flight from LAX to MRY on a Saab 340B. We we sitting in row 3, which is the front row.

On approach to MRY, in IFR conditions, decending through the clouds, all of a sudden, we heard the alarm from the cockpit "Terrain Terrain Pull Up, Pull up". Immediately pilots changed to climb pitch full throttle, and abruptly pulled up. The alarm horn then quieted, and we continued our approach into MRY. The FA looked at me and said - "that happens all the time - the things are too sensitive. The pilots are from DFW, they are not used to mountains". I guess I need to see the approach plate into MRY to see if that is true...but it scared me though - I don't like to hear things like that during IFR conditions....
