it's in a residential area and isn't near nothing. The joys of downtown BH are a LONG walk down Beverly Drive.

I'd second the suggestion about the Century Plaza, it's not very exciting itself but it's near a mall that will entertain the kiddies (a new google-plex movie theater, kids trolling, A&F, Gap, Bloomies, Apple Store, blah blah)
