Crew Shortages, Exhaustion in Control Tower Led to Airport Incident in Atlanta

Delta Air Lines flight 1606 was accidentally cleared for take-off on January 10, 2007 at the airport in Atlanta by a fellow air traffic controller who did not realize that it was not cleared for a safe departure, claims Gary Brittain of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. He further alleges that the error could have resulted in a collision.

However, at the last moment, he caught his own error and stopped the aircraft from taking off, resulting in hot brakes that led to three tires blowing and deflating.
