"Time" article on Greenhouse Airlines
I was shocked to read in a full-page article in the February 12th issue of Time magazine, titled Greenhouse Airlines, that "5,200 lbs. of carbon per passenger is emitted in a roundtrip flight between New York City and Tokyo".
Given that the least dense configuration of a Boeing 777-200, which is a typical aircraft used on this route, carries 224 passengers, this means that 582,400 lbs. of carbon is emitted from a one-way flight.
I was even more shocked to discover that the maximum gross takeoff weight of the 777-200 is 545,000 lbs.
Which means that on each New York to Tokyo flight, the entire aircraft including all its cargo and passengers, is converted to carbon!
Surely by now, somebody would have raised concerns about all these disappearing aircraft and passengers?
