The insurance provided as a standard card benefit is for damage to the rental car only, and is secondary to any other insurance. In other words, you file a claim with your personal auto insurance and any amount they do not cover, such as the deductible, may be reimbursed.
That description fits the benefit for US-issued cards, and perhaps elsewhere, but is not global.
jwillett13 doesn't show us where s/he is based. If in the US, fine. Elsewhere, it could be different.
For example, my UK-issued plat card offers much more comprehensive car insurance, to the extent that AmEx tells me to decline all insurance offers at the rental desk.

For me, this is a major benefit when renting in the US and Canada where I can rent without automatic insurance cover. In Europe and elsewhere, some rental companies only offer inclusive rates.
