I wasn't aware of a catalyst being available for that reaction. In any event making nitro uses concentrated acids and is an exothermic reaction requiring careful cooling lest fireworks prematurely ensue.

Nitroglycerin was never, to the best of my knowledge, considered as a candidate for the binary explosive threat the TSA is exercised about.
