I'll ask the obvious question, how does it take 10 years to accumulate 12k miles? Sounds like just 2 or 3 domestic trips to me.

I'd try to use the ECV for both of you, and get some more miles. Cash and miles deals are usually not a good deal, but if you're so strapped for cash, I guess it would be okay.
