Northwest is undergoing a major overhaul of their fleet. They have 72 new planes coming in (E-170 and CRJ900) and have retired their Avros in advance of this (as well as speeding up the process of the DC9 retirements). This has imo left a temporary lack of larger airplanes, leading to the use of CRJs on routes that didn't have them before.
