I don't see why this would be a problem. I had to join a YUL-YYZ-HNL trip once in YYZ as I had a last-minute morning meeting in ROC. I called and informed them I would not be flying the first leg. They said it was fine, although I do admit having a bit of trepidation arriving at YYZ and anticipating them telling me they've canceled everything.
