Weather delays are out of US's control, of course. The OP is arguing that mechanical delays are within US's control, and therefore US is responsible for the delay.
I tend to agree with the OP. Sure, mechanical problems will happen. But US should have a contigency plan, like being able to swap out planes when one is put out of service. I believe US does swap out planes when they are available. But if another was not available for the OP's flight, then US should not treat the mechanical problems like weather delays in terms of compensating its customers for a delay for which US is responsible.
The OP included the line about not being upgraded to F because he thought being upgraded would have been compensation for the delay. Since that compensation was not available at the time, he is asking US for compensation now. It's worth a shot. I've gotten compensation (F upgrade) after having my bags delayed, so why not get compensation when the
whole person is delayed, too?
