If you apply for the upgrade online (or calling), it will be waitlisted. You can check online whether it's cleared; it will say "confirmed" instead of "waitlisted" if it does. Also, while waitlisted you'll also see your Y reservation (so you'll see the segment twice), but once it confirms you only see the upgraded cabin.
You can also register for easyupdate and check the option to be alerted when upgrades clear. But this doesn't always work.
