You need W class or greater to use a SWU. Seatmaps don't really tell you anything useful. You need I class available to upgrade from Y to C with the SWU. If I is available now, you can confirm the upgrade. Otherwise you will be waitlisted until/if I opens up. SWUs only upgrade UA metal, so you can't upgrade Virgin Blue.
