My work abroad is with people who speak to me in English and for whom English is a second (or 3rd etc.) language.

I find that in listening to my Swiss and German students, I unconsciously adopt their syntax and vocabulary as a way of trying to communicate with them in a way that they will understand. In fact, it does cut down on the number of times I have to try several ways of phrasing something in order to be understood.

When I get home, my kids tell me that my English is very like that of my overseas students. It lasts a couple of days.
