I have no idea what their thinking is, but my friend had a multiple entry visa for India anyway since he was planning on staying in India for a few days on the return trip. Also, he had two seperate tickets (ZRH-BOM-ZRH and BOM-SIN-BOM), which may have been an issue as well.

BTW, I just remembered - he couldn't even check his luggage through to SQ - apparently, BOM is not set up to handle that, either.
