It's cynical, sure, but unnecessary? Not so much.

It's not standard so it shouldn't really be done. People have enough to listen to at the start of the flight without hearing someone show off their admirable language skills. If the need arises for a member of crew to communicate with a passenger in a language other than English, we'll deal with it there and then.
