If the lighter has real sentimental value to you, don't check it in your checked bags. Too much opportunity for airline employee thieves or TSA criminals to steal it. Leave it stateside or as you suggested - FedEx it to a friend overseas.

Thanks. Just one note. Impossible to leave it stateside as it is in UK and would be going with me to Canada.
