I was thinking that if I take the fibre material, wick and flint out of it that would basically disable the lighter and when arrived at destination buy new inserts.

Thats the US standards, most UK airlines suggest no lighters allowed, but
I could not find anything from the DFT, UK site regarding the lighters.
In any case, these are the rules.. who knows what the local security
inspector would do.
