Yes, yes, it's totally normal to wear these honkin' huge 'phones on the plane while reading, sleeping, enjoying tunes, etc., but does one really need the noise-cancelling technology in the restroom??
What makes you think the Bluetooth headset thread is a joke?
I think it was seriously started by some serious technophobes who resent every new device that comes down the line because it means sooner or later, they're going to be forced to get one.

*ahem* Not to totally hijack your thread though....
Yeah, I've seen the guy/gal. I'm not for huge honking things like that myself, but I can see where if they're noise-cancelling/noise-absorbing, you'd want to keep them on. Think of it. You've had them on for the past couple hours, they're really comfy and everything's quiet. Would YOU want to take them off and suddenly get FWOOSH *CABIN NOISE ROAR* in your ears?
I wouldn't. I'd probably find a way to make sure I don't trip over the cord or drop it in the 'loo and keep them on.

Really, this whole "technology-as-fashion-accessory" meme is getting pretty ridiculous IMHO. Did you also carp and titter at your officemates when they got a FAX machine back in 1983 ?

Technology-as-fashion-accessory is just an advertising meme and you're falling for it hook, line and sinker. I've done some UI/UE work and people use technology for far more important things than looking good.
