My preferred method is to cross the "U" at ground level, to the east of the garage. There's even grass and plants this way. You'll have to look out for traffic a bit, but signaled crosswalks take you across the terminal roadway. Ten minutes walk with rollaboard. You can directly exit to the lower level from whichever United terminal (6,7, or 8) you arrive at.
Following the "U" past the Bradley Terminal may take 20 mins., and it's not too pleasant to walk under a roadway overhang.
If you are going to walk "the long way" around, make sure you do it on the upper deck! Waaaay too much smog and noise gets trapped on the lower deck.
It's not a bad walk, either, IMO, as long as the weather is pleasant (it usually is) and you have the time and hand luggage that behaves. Nice way to stretch your legs between flights and do some plane spotting near Bradley.
