For a B747 the cruising altitude is 28,000 - 35,000 ft, depending on weight and flight plan.

Maybe your flight was at 35k and not 45k?

I can't recall the maximum altitude for a B747, but I know it's 43k for a B767. But, you wouldn't see a B767 at that altitude since it's not as fuel efficient.
