People were friendly and the atmosphere was great. I did have a minor moment of panic when travelling on the subway and all the lights suddenly went out but they came back on quickly enough.
The worst part was sitting at JFK waiting for a flight to Chicago and watching them try to free a frozen shut hold door with pick axes.
My parents had a really great experience on their first visit - they took a taxi to their hotel and because they had no USD asked the driver to stop at an ATM. He just said "Welcome to New York" and drove them for nothing.
