I travelled this sector twice last year and was able to upgrade using miles both times. I don't really know how it works, but I called United her in Australia a week before the flight and asked them if I could upgrade for miles. They confirmed it over the phone.

On each occasion, the C cabin has been full when it came to the time of flying.

I'd give the miles ago.
