For prepaid they'll be just as good.
You may want to check with your UK operator to see if they offer any international roaming discount packages for SMS, the cost of sending SMS on prepaid can be pretty steep here.
Prepaid in the US is nowhere near as advanced as other countries. There is nowhere at JFK (as far as I know) where you can buy a Cingular or T-mobile sim card.
