First of all let us correct some points you brought up:

-CO elites do get access to lounges. However this is restricted to Platinums (The only Elite Plus level on their program) flying on international same-day itineraries (standard SkyTeam rules).
-He will get miles, however these will be award miles and not status miles.

Next time, instead of flying the VS codeshare, go down the road and fly Continental on their own metal from Gatwick.
