Not to split hairs here but... the S- preceeding one's name on a boarding pass indicates the person is a computer generated selectee...there is something in the PNR that the flags the program (last minute booking, booked by agency in Syria, etc.) that meets one of selectee criteria and this person MUST undergo screening at boarding as well as additional screening of checked baggage. The word "random" in my opinion, is more so used for passengers who are selected randomly for gate screening to keep the screening process continuous as required by the federal directive.
