Edited to add: I was able to check-in for a NWA flight while I was testing a Sony Ericsson P910 using Opera - but with GPRS, the process took almost 45 minutes and was extremely painful. If it could work on Opera using EVDO, that would be great.
The communication technology is not really the issue. It's the browser capabilities, which are largely crippled on the Q and other such devices. Many websites ignore accessibility guidelines and rely on the availability of JavaScript to submit forms (like when logging in).
I would not expect CO's OLCI to work properly, as I am quite certain it relies on JavaScript (especially if you think you're going to pull up the seat selection map!).
One of the more exciting things about the upcoming iPhone is that it has a full-featured browser (Safari) running on it. But, that's another 5-6 months away...
