I haven't tried to pack fishingpoles in quite awhile, but what I might look at would be to go to the local hardware store and buy some PVC tubing that is big enough to hold your pole. It shouldn't cost too much and the tubing should be able to handle just about anything the airline baggage handlers throw at it.
