I still don't understand why people will bring more carry-ons and less checked luggage because of checked baggage screening.

At most airports, the baggage screening will be done in between the ticket counter and the airplane. AA has been doing this at ORD all week, and I haven't heard any complaints. So, to the passenger, there really isn't any difference between before (no checked screening) and now (checked screening). It's not like they're going to ask you to get on the conveyor belt and follow your bags through the system.

However, bringing all of your stuff through the security checkpoint would seem to be more inconvienient. If you check "questionable" items, as some of you have mentioned, there's no need for explainations or hand searches. Checked baggage only gets x-rayed for bombs, not for nail clippers. But, if you try going through regular security with nail clippers, they're either going to get confiscated or you're going to have to explain them. This seems like a bigger inconvenience.
