I can understand your logic and as long as you fly at least a few times per year, this logic makes sense. Your best stategy would be to complete the challenge after June 16th (giving you status until Feb 09) and then have your wife complete the challenge after June 16th 2009) giving her plat until Feb 2011.

Because of the soft landing from platinum, you will have gold status from Mar 09 until your wife completes the challenge and your wife will have gold from Mar 2011 until Feb 2012. That's almost 5 years of elite status without you guys actually spending the time to earn it the real way. Not a bad way to "beat the system." Good Luck
