I was quite relieved to see that Old Kyoto is actually a tiny bit smaller than Time Out, it does have black and white photos in it but it's not by any means a coffee table book. (abmj-jr warned about the large size of "7 paths") This version is 2005 and will fit well into a suitcase.
In 'Old Kyoto' Do check out the entry on Ichiwa near Imamiya Shrine - where they serve aburimochi and tea. Its such a lovely place to visit - and that sauce they smother the chargrilled mochi cakes with is just divine....

(I can send you a photograph of the shop if you pm me your email address - it shows how atmospheric the area is at dusk

'Old Kyoto' in its previous incarnation can still be found as a large hardback book with colour photpgraphs - the ladies at Ichiwa may show it to you - it seems a convenient way for them to convey some information about their building to tourists as they don't speak English there.
