All you need to do is have your number put into the system. It will automatically recognise that you are Star Alliance Gold.
It will have something like BD*G on your boarding pass, or as was the case on Lufthansa yesterday afternoon, it said BDP.
Supposedly with some lounges/carriers you have to have the physical card. Status on a boarding card won't cut it. You'll definitely want to get your card ASAP.
