However the TPA flight is at 1845 (arrival in UK at 3am US time), against the MIA flight at 2145 (arrival in UK around 6am US time).

Would be interested to know whether it is as easy to drive to MIA, or how much hassle there is returning a car and getting through the airport.
According to my map it's c.270 miles TPA to MIA, so the answers a definite no - that's about 5 hours by car with stops so I can't see any way the LHR flight can be that much better then an LGW one.

FWIW the last time I went through MIA was last summer and it was AA not BA, BUT the car rental location was a mess because of road construction and the security was truly HORRIBLE - AA didn't seem to have elite lines so you just have to go to the back and be patient.
